To Pod, or Not to Pod?

Laundry detergent pods are back in the news. A recent report has named the pods as an increasingly common cause of eye injury in preschoolers. We’ve long been aware of traumatic injuries tied to ingestion; the brightly coloured pouches can look a lot like candy to curious kids. It is important to note the risk also extends to contact with surface residues of accidentally punctured pods. Hand-eye transfers, and direct contact with the pods can result in severe ocular burns.

In addition to these accidental injuries, the everyday use of certain pod brands can mean you and yours have a much higher risk of long-term exposure to harmful toxins. These can significantly increase the risk of serious health conditions, such as cancer and asthma. Some of the nasty ingredients to watch out for are 1,4-Dioxane, Formaldehyde, and EDTA.

Whether in pod form or other, current legislation doesn’t require the manufacturers of cleaning products to list all the ingredients in their products or warn us about harmful chemicals. This, can leave most consumers unaware of the toxins they’re bringing into their home.

How do you make smart choices? Until companies are required to be transparent about everything in their products and the effects of those ingredients on our health and the environment, it will be important for consumers to educate themselves. We understand this is often a daunting and time-consuming task; as such, we would like to share some helpful links, and remind you to always practice safety in your home regardless of the products that you use.
