The cost of truly being green

One of the questions we frequently get asked is, “why are Live for Tomorrow products pricier than other green cleaning products?”. Looking at the purchase price alone, it is understandable why someone would pose this question. There is so much to our product line that we want to share so that our customers understand the value that is contained in every product. It all comes down to three factors: ingredients, packaging and concentration.

  1. Ingredients: When we say that our products are made of plant and mineral based ingredients, we mean it! We walk our talk. We avoid known carcinogens, mutagens and reproductive toxins listed by the U.S. National Toxicology Program, and the European Union’s REACH. We also do not use palm oil – as deforestation is negatively impacting natural habitats. As such, our ingredients are typically found in food products and / or premium personal care products. The number one ingredient used as a cleaning agent in our detergents is coconut. This coupled with the 100% pure essential oils used for our scents are costly and are the main drivers for the price of our products.
  2. Packaging: Prior to launching Live for Tomorrow, we made a conscious decision that we would put as much emphasis on the packaging as we do on our ingredients. This in turn is how we ended up with aluminum bottles – a material that can be readily recycled into other products. According to “recycleeverywhere.ca“ nearly 75 per cent of all the aluminum produced since 1888 is still in use today and the process uses 95 per cent less energy than using virgin ore.” And on top of using earth-friendly packaging, we hope that you love the sleek, light-weight design. While the aluminum can be recycled in your local blue bin, it can also be re-used and refilled with your favourite Live for Tomorrow product, when you visit one of our refill retail partners! By doing so, you save money by not buying new packaging.
  3. Concentration: By taking the steps we have outlined in 1 and 2 above, we have offset the associated higher costs by creating highly concentrated products. This is where it is important to consider the number of loads contained in each bottle. For example, our 500 ml liquid laundry detergent contains enough product for 50 loads of laundry. At our manufacturer suggested retail price (“MSRP”) of $17.95 that works out to $0.359 per load, which is comparable, and in some cases even more affordable, than some of our competitors. And to top it off, our bottles are so small and light, that you can easily carry it instead of lugging a big jug of plastic.

 

Bottom line, there is more to our products than a sticker price. We recommend that you read the ingredients used in products and become familiar with them to decipher the good from the bad. Keep in mind two things – 1) if the brand is not being transparent about the ingredients used, ask yourself why not, and 2) just because a brand used to use good ingredients, it doesn’t mean that they have continued to do so… especially when little players are acquired by big players. So, keep an eye out! As a little player, we promise to stick to principles and bring you only products filled with good ingredients!
